Andrea Mantegna
Andrea Mantegna (circa 1431 - September 13, 1506) was an Italian painter and the first Renaissance painter in Northern Italy. He was the son-in-law and student of the Roman archaeologist Jacopo Bellini. Andrea made many experiments with perspective in order to create a grander and more shocking visual effect. For example, in "Lamentation of the Dead Christ" he chose to depict the body of Christ from the perspective of Christ's feet. The metallic feel of his landscapes and the stone texture of some of the figures attest to the way painters of the time painted based on the principles of statues. The studio he led was the main printmaking studio in Venice before 1500.
