In 2012, Warren defeated then-Republican Senator Scott Brown and became the first female U.S. Senator from Massachusetts. In 2018, she was re-elected by a large margin, defeating Republican candidate Jeff Deal. On February 9, 2019, Warren announced her participation in the 2020 US presidential election. She was briefly considered a front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination late in the year, but her support subsequently declined. She dropped out of the race on March 5, 2020, following Super Tuesday. In 2024, she was successfully re-elected and started her third Senate term.
