Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. (English: Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., /ˈbaɪdən/; November 20, 1942-), commonly known as Joe Biden, is an American Democratic politician. He was born in Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Delaware and Syracuse University and received a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctor of Laws. He has served as a U.S. Senator from Delaware (1973-2009), the 44th Vice President of the United States (2009-2017), and the 46th President of the United States (2021-2025). Biden grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and New Castle County, Delaware, and studied at the University of Delaware before earning a law degree from Syracuse University in 1968. In 1970, he was elected as the New Castle County Assemblyman; in 1972, at the age of 30, Biden was elected as the Delaware State Senator, becoming the sixth youngest senator in U.S. history. Biden was also re-elected as a U.S. Senator for six times and was a long-term member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. He served as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1987 to 1995. During his tenure, he successfully promoted the "Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984" and the "Violence Against Women Act", and supervised 6 U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearings, including the hearings of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas. Biden opposed the Gulf War in 1991, but supported the expansion of the NATO alliance to Eastern Europe, and supported U.S. intervention in the Yugoslav Civil War in the 1990s; he supported the 2002 resolution authorizing the Iraq War, but opposed the U.S. troop surge in 2007. In the 2008 presidential election, Biden became Barack Obama's partner. After winning, he became vice president and was re-elected in the 2012 presidential election. As vice president, Biden oversaw infrastructure spending in 2009 in response to the Great Recession caused by the financial crisis. His negotiations with congressional Republicans helped pass legislation including the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010, which resolved the tax impasse; the Budget Control Act of 2011, which resolved the debt ceiling crisis; and the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, which addressed the looming "fiscal cliff." He was instrumental in the adoption of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, supported military intervention in Libya, and helped the United States formulate its policy toward Iraq before the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq in 2011.
