Matthew Louis "Matt" Gaetz II (English: Matthew Louis "Matt" Gaetz II, /ˈɡeɪts/, May 7, 1982 -) is a Republican American politician who served as a federal representative representing Florida's 1st Congressional District from 2017 to 2024. Gates, a Trump ally and libertarian populist, is widely viewed by the media and Democrats as far-right. On November 13, 2024, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced that Gates would be nominated to serve as U.S. Attorney General in the second Trump cabinet. On November 21, Gates, who was plagued by multiple controversies, announced on X that he was withdrawing from the nomination for attorney general. On December 24, 2024, the Ethics Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives issued an investigation report, revealing that Matt Gates regularly paid women to "engage in sexual acts", had sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old girl, used or possessed cocaine or ecstasy (MDMA/Ecstasy), accepted gifts that exceeded the limit of the House of Representatives, and obstructed justice.
