Franklin Edward Kameny (May 21, 1925 – October 11, 2011) was an American gay rights activist. In 1957, Kameny was discharged from the U.S. Army Map Service for being gay, which led to his struggle with U.S. authorities. Kameny has formally appealed his dismissal from the U.S. Civil Service Commission. Although unsuccessful, the lawsuit was notable because it was the first known civil rights lawsuit in a U.S. court based on sexual orientation.
