Angus King
Angus Stanley King, Jr. (English: Angus Stanley King, Jr.; March 31, 1944 -) is an American independent politician and lawyer who has served as a U.S. Senator from Maine since 2013 and previously served as the Governor of Maine from 1995 to 2003. King was born and raised in Virginia and moved to Maine after graduating from law school. In 1989, he founded Northeast Energy Management, Inc., which develops and operates electric energy conservation projects. In the 1994 Maine gubernatorial election, he won a four-way race as an independent candidate and was re-elected in a landslide in the 1998 Maine gubernatorial election. As the nation's only independent governor, King enjoyed high approval ratings during his tenure. After leaving office in 2003, King returned to the business world. King won Maine's 2012 Senate election, succeeding retiring Maine Republican Olympia Snow. He was successfully re-elected to a second term in 2018 after the state first adopted ranked-choice elections, and won a third term in 2024. He aligned himself with Democrats in the caucuses because of how the U.S. Senate committees are grouped. He is one of two independents in the Senate; the other is Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who is also aligned with Democrats.
