Andre Gide
Writers · France
André Paul Guillaume Gide (French: André Paul Guillaume Gide French pronunciation: [ɑdʁe pɔl ɡijom ʒid], November 22, 1869 – February 19, 1951), French writer, winner of the 1947 Nobel Prize for Literature. Gide's early literature was characterized by symbolism, which gradually developed into anti-imperialist ideas until the interwar period. Gide was good at writing fiction and autobiography. In his words, he revealed the two sides of his personality that were split by his conservative education and narrow social moralism: conflict and ultimate harmony. His works depict freedom and empowerment under strict moral constraints, and you can feel his continuous and honest efforts in the pursuit of knowledge. His self-exploratory writing reflects his thoughts on how to become fully himself, including embracing one's gender essence without betraying one's personal values. Gide's political activities were affected by the social trends of the time; he traveled to the Soviet Union in 1936 and declared his abandonment of communism.

For example, in "Lamentation of the Dead Christ" he chose to depict the body of Christ from the perspective of Christ's feet. The metallic feel of his landscapes and the stone texture of some of the figures attest to the way painters of the time painted based on the principles of statues. Antoine Lavoisier
Scientists · France
Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier (French: Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier; August 26, 1743 - May 8, 1794), a French aristocrat, chemist, and biologist, was honored as the "Father of Modern Chemistry" by later generations. He transformed chemistry from qualitative to quantitative, named oxygen and hydrogen, and predicted the existence of silicon. He helped establish the metric system. Lavoisier proposed the definition of "element". Based on this definition, he published the first modern list of chemical elements in 1789, listing 33 elements, including light and heat and some compounds that were considered elements at the time. Lavoisier's contribution made chemistry in the 18th century more physical and mathematical. He proposed standardized chemical nomenclature and wrote the first truly modern chemistry textbook, Traité Élémentaire de Chimie. He advocated and improved quantitative analysis methods and used them to verify the law of conservation of mass. He founded the oxidation theory to explain experimental phenomena such as combustion, pointing out that animal respiration is essentially slow oxidation. These epoch-making contributions made him one of the greatest chemists in history. Lavoisier was a tax collector, so he had ample funds for scientific research. But because of this, he was guillotined and died during the French Revolution.
