Andrew Zachary Fire (English: Andrew Zachary Fire, April 27, 1959 -) was born in California. He is an American medical scientist and professor of pathology and genetics at Stanford Medical School. In 2006, he and Craig Mello, professor of molecular medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, discovered the phenomenon of RNA interference in eukaryotes and proved that double-stranded RNA can efficiently and specifically block the expression of corresponding genes. Fire called this RNAi (RNA interference), and they jointly won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Andrew Fahe graduated from MIT in 1983 with a Ph.D. Then he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Professor Sydney Brenner's research group at the University of Cambridge, UK. In 1986, he transferred to the Carnegie Institution of the United States and began research on RNA interference. He has held a professorship at Johns Hopkins University since 1986. In 2003, Fae served as professor of pathology and genetics at Stanford Medical School in the United States.
