Mark Andrew Spitz (English: Mark Andrew Spitz, February 10, 1950 -), born in California, United States, Jewish, former American male swimmer, one of the best American legends in the history of world sports, and the greatest athlete in the history of swimming. He swept 7 gold medals in a single Olympic Games and broke all world records at the time. So far, Spitz is still the only athlete in the history of the Olympic Games to win gold medals in any individual event and break all world records. He won 7 gold medals in one fell swoop at the 1972 Summer Olympics, becoming the athlete with the most gold medals in a single Olympic Games. It was not until the 2008 Summer Olympics that the world record was surpassed by Michael Phelps' 8 gold medals. Between 1965 and 1972, Spitz won 9 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 1 bronze medal in the Olympic Games, 5 gold medals in the Pan American Games, won 8 NCAA championships, and broke 33 world records.
