El Greco
Dominicos Theotokopulos (Greek: Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος, pronounced [ðoˈminikos θeotoˈkopulos]; October 1, 1541 – April 7, 1614), better known as El Greco (Spanish: El Greco, pronounced: [el ˈɣɾeko], literally: "Greek"), a Greek painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance, considered one of the greatest artists of all time. El Greco was the nickname, and he usually signed his full name on the paintings in Greek letters, often adding the word Κρής Krḗs, which means "Crete" in ancient Greek. El Greco was born in the Kingdom of Candia (now Crete), which was then part of the Republic of Venice and the center of post-Byzantine art. He trained and became a master in this tradition; at the age of 26, like other Greek artists, he traveled to Venice. In 1570, he moved to Rome, opened a studio and completed a series of works. While living in Italy, El Greco absorbed the art of many masters of the time, especially Tintoretto and Titian, and incorporated elements of Mannerism and the Venetian Renaissance into his personal style. In 1577, he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked until his death. In Toledo, El Greco received several important commissions and created famous paintings such as "View of Toledo" and "Opening of the Fifth Seal". El Greco's dramatic style, which emphasized subjective experience, confused his contemporaries and was not appreciated until the 20th century. He is regarded as a pioneer of Expressionism and Cubism, and his personality and works have also been a source of inspiration for poets and writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Nikos Kazantzakis. Modern scholars claim that El Greco's style was unique and could not be classified into any traditional school. His most famous features are the sinuous and elongated human figures and the use of color, which often has a fantasy or hallucinatory meaning, combining Byzantine and Western painting traditions. Although largely ignored by his contemporaries, El Greco is now regarded as one of the greatest painters in the history of art. Art critics firmly rank him among the greatest artists of all time, citing his originality, expressive power, and innovative use of form and color. His works are considered to transcend the artistic tradition that gave birth to them and had a profound influence on subsequent generations of artists, including Francisco Goya, Diego Velázquez, European
