Shen Yuan (1959-) was born in Xianyou, Fujian, and is a French-Chinese artist. After graduating from the China Academy of Art in 1982, she began to participate in the Xiamen Dada Group. The artist group was exploring radical avant-garde art in South China. After the Tiananmen Incident in 1989, she and her husband Huang Yongping immigrated to Paris, France. As a contemporary artist, Shen Yuan's art often reflects China's cultural and political realities. Her work carries a strong message of feminism and gender roles. Themes of her work include issues of labor (child labor, women workers), slums and social conflict. Her creative process often uses on-site investigation and local creative methods, working with local children or people to complete her works. She participated in numerous exhibitions. Her and her husband's works were exhibited in the group exhibition "Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World" at the Guggenheim Museum, and in the exhibition "Athlete's Foot" at the Tang Contemporary Art Center in Hong Kong.
