Mahatma Gandhi
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, was an Indian lawyer, thinker, anti-colonial activist and political ethicist. He used non-violent resistance to successfully lead India to win independence from British rule (see Indian Independence Movement). He inspired civil rights and freedom movements around the world. In 1914 in South Africa, someone first used the Sanskrit honorific Mahātmā (meaning "great soul" or "worthy of respect") to call him, and it has since been widely used around the world.
