Leaves Apple
The archive dates the departure to September 1985. Distinguish personal recollection from the organizational process.
A free research pack for articles, videos and podcasts
Research Jobs’s departure, NeXT and Pixar, and his return through a timeline, source locators and three editorial angles.
The archive dates the departure to September 1985. Distinguish personal recollection from the organizational process.
Jobs purchased Lucasfilm’s computer division and established Pixar independently; both companies’ histories corroborate the event.
CHM dates the NeXT presentation in San Francisco to this day. A launch does not establish later sales or profitability.
CHM records the hardware division’s sale and a shift toward short sequences and commercials.
Pixar’s timeline dates the film’s release. Creative work belongs to a team; avoid assigning all authorship to an investor or executive.
A dated email to Pixar employees records the announcement and Jobs’s expected role at the time.
The 1997 10-K uses February 4 as the acquisition date and reports a $427 million total with its components. Do not substitute the December 1996 announcement date for the date recorded in the financial filing.
An employee email discusses focus and organizational policies. It establishes what was communicated, not the full effects.
The filing’s Reports on Form 8-K section records the appointment announcement, a separate event from the acquisition announcement.
Which statements describe feelings, and which historical claims need independent support?
Separate expectations at the time from later outcomes; do not assume a predetermined return plan.
What problem did a policy address, and what further evidence could test its effects?
Separate the product-portfolio explanation from the claim that Pixar caused Jobs to learn focus.
Investigate how an individual’s return intersects with a corporate acquisition.
Open with the acquisition news, step back to NeXT, then return to the filing. Show announcement, accounting and appointment as distinct nodes.

Pitfall: Do not say he became CEO on the 1996 announcement date. Continuity of assets does not prove foresight.
Next research: For technical influence, add operating-system documentation and engineers’ accounts; this pack does not infer the entire later product roadmap.
Investigate how a technology finds applications across products and business models.
Use the hardware sale as a hinge between the earlier division and later film. Distinguish investment, engineering, creative and distribution roles.

Pitfall: Do not imply Jobs invented Pixar’s animation technology from scratch or treat a corporate shift as proof of personal transformation.
Next research: A full business analysis needs contemporary costs, contracts and financial records; no investment return is calculated here.
Investigate how people reinterpret setbacks after succeeding.
Introduce the later narrative, then calibrate dates with earlier records. Present personal interpretation alongside externally checkable events.

Pitfall: The claim that success required departure is counterfactual; one successful case does not prove failure is generally beneficial.
Next research: Advice to other founders requires unsuccessful comparison cases, resource constraints and capacity to absorb losses.
Example: structure a roughly six-minute video as acquisition news (30 seconds), NeXT and Pixar paths (two minutes), return milestones and internal communication (two minutes), and unanswered questions (90 seconds). This is an editorial outline, not a script; durations are suggested production timing, not source-video timestamps.
My second story is about love and loss
Useful for how Jobs later described the departure; it does not independently establish board procedures or counterfactual causation.
Part II, 1985–1996 / Part III, 1996–2011
Distinguish Jobs’s documents from archive editors’ notes; cite the individual item and its date.
1986 / 1995
Useful for company milestones; a corporate narrative is selective and is not an independent assessment.
1986
Cross-check the sale of the computer division against Pixar’s account.
NeXT / October 12, 1988 / 1990
Provides hardware and animation context; this is a later historical account, not a contemporaneous record of every event.
NEXT ACQUISITION / September 16, 1997
Check acquisition accounting, price basis and appointment announcement. This is a filing copy, not a SEC-hosted URL.
