Start with a testable question: which technologies, organizations and business relationships carried over into Jobs’s return? Use this pack to build a research outline; chronology alone cannot establish that one experience caused a later decision.

## Timeline

### 1985-09 · Leaves Apple

The archive dates the departure to September 1985. Distinguish personal recollection from the organizational process.

[Steve Jobs Archive](https://book.stevejobsarchive.com/)

定位 / Locator: Part II, 1985–1996 Editor’s Note

### 1986 · Pixar becomes independent

Jobs purchased Lucasfilm’s computer division and established Pixar independently; both companies’ histories corroborate the event.

定位 / Locator: 1986

### 1988-10-12 · NeXT presentation

CHM dates the NeXT presentation in San Francisco to this day. A launch does not establish later sales or profitability.

[Computer History Museum · Dag Spicer](https://computerhistory.org/blog/steve-jobs/)

定位 / Locator: October 12, 1988

### 1990 · Pixar sells its hardware division

CHM records the hardware division’s sale and a shift toward short sequences and commercials.

[Computer History Museum · Dag Spicer](https://computerhistory.org/blog/steve-jobs/)

定位 / Locator: sold its hardware division in 1990

### 1995-11-22 · Toy Story opens

Pixar’s timeline dates the film’s release. Creative work belongs to a team; avoid assigning all authorship to an investor or executive.

定位 / Locator: 1995

### 1996-12-20 · NeXT acquisition announcement

A dated email to Pixar employees records the announcement and Jobs’s expected role at the time.

### 1997-02 · Separate accounting and completion dates

The 1997 10-K uses February 4 as the acquisition date and reports a $427 million total with its components. Do not substitute the December 1996 announcement date for the date recorded in the financial filing.

### 1997-08-12 · An internal message after returning

An employee email discusses focus and organizational policies. It establishes what was communicated, not the full effects.

### 1997-09-16 · Interim CEO appointment announcement

The filing’s Reports on Form 8-K section records the appointment announcement, a separate event from the acquisition announcement.

## Source locators

### Loss and departure: a later self-narrative

2005-06-12

[My second story is about love and loss](https://news.stanford.edu/stories/2005/06/youve-got-find-love-jobs-says)

Which statements describe feelings, and which historical claims need independent support?

### Acquisition news: expectations on the day

1996-12-20

[Email to Pixar Employees / Apple Acquires NeXT](https://book.stevejobsarchive.com/#email-pixar-apple-next)

Separate expectations at the time from later outcomes; do not assume a predetermined return plan.

### Organizational policies: contemporary communication

1997-08-12

[A More Entrepreneurial Apple](https://book.stevejobsarchive.com/#email-apple-entrepreneurial)

What problem did a policy address, and what further evidence could test its effects?

### Product focus: a public explanation after returning

1998（延伸阅读 / further reading）

[Speech at Macworld / four great products](https://book.stevejobsarchive.com/#speech-macworld-1998)

Separate the product-portfolio explanation from the claim that Pixar caused Jobs to learn focus.

## Three editorial angles

### The vehicle of return: a company and its assets

Investigate how an individual’s return intersects with a corporate acquisition.

Open with the acquisition news, step back to NeXT, then return to the filing. Show announcement, accounting and appointment as distinct nodes.

[Apple Computer · 1997 Form 10-K](https://d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net/CIK-0000320193/b0bcedc7-e4d8-4a39-8f03-5b99f88e8f91.html) · [Steve Jobs Archive](https://book.stevejobsarchive.com/)

Pitfall: Do not say he became CEO on the 1996 announcement date. Continuity of assets does not prove foresight.

Next research: For technical influence, add operating-system documentation and engineers’ accounts; this pack does not infer the entire later product roadmap.

### Pixar’s path: hardware to storytelling

Investigate how a technology finds applications across products and business models.

Use the hardware sale as a hinge between the earlier division and later film. Distinguish investment, engineering, creative and distribution roles.

[Pixar Animation Studios](https://www.pixar.com/our-story) · [Lucasfilm](https://www.lucasfilm.com/who-we-are/our-story/) · [Computer History Museum · Dag Spicer](https://computerhistory.org/blog/steve-jobs/)

Pitfall: Do not imply Jobs invented Pixar’s animation technology from scratch or treat a corporate shift as proof of personal transformation.

Next research: A full business analysis needs contemporary costs, contracts and financial records; no investment return is calculated here.

### “Failure helps”: narrative and evidence

Investigate how people reinterpret setbacks after succeeding.

Introduce the later narrative, then calibrate dates with earlier records. Present personal interpretation alongside externally checkable events.

[Stanford University](https://news.stanford.edu/stories/2005/06/youve-got-find-love-jobs-says) · [Apple Computer · 1997 Form 10-K](https://d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net/CIK-0000320193/b0bcedc7-e4d8-4a39-8f03-5b99f88e8f91.html)

Pitfall: The claim that success required departure is counterfactual; one successful case does not prove failure is generally beneficial.

Next research: Advice to other founders requires unsuccessful comparison cases, resource constraints and capacity to absorb losses.

## Limits and interpretation

- Dates: announcement, completion, accounting and appointment can differ. Attribute a filing’s date explicitly rather than silently mixing sources.

- Perspective: a personal speech has rhetorical aims; company histories have brand perspectives. Official provenance does not imply neutrality.

- Causation: events and hypotheses are provided; the pack does not establish that Pixar alone caused any Apple decision.

- Scope: the core is 1985–1997, with 1998 further reading. Board records, interviews and financial evidence are not exhaustive.

## Production example

Example: structure a roughly six-minute video as acquisition news (30 seconds), NeXT and Pixar paths (two minutes), return milestones and internal communication (two minutes), and unanswered questions (90 seconds). This is an editorial outline, not a script; durations are suggested production timing, not source-video timestamps.
