Muhammad Ali Jinnah (Urdu: محمد علی جناح Muhammad Ali Jinnah, December 25, 1876 - September 11, 1948) was a 20th-century South Asian politician, the founding leader of Pakistan and the first governor-general after independence. He initially supported and participated in the movement for British India's independence from British colonial rule. Later, his position gradually changed and he turned to seeking to establish an independent Muslim country in South Asia. Jinnah is revered in Pakistan as the "Great Leader" (Urdu: قائد اعظم Quaid-i-Azam) and the "Father of the Nation" (Urdu: بابائے قوم Baba-i-Qaum), and his birthday is an official holiday in Pakistan.
