He has been elected to the House of Representatives for 16 terms since 1979 and is the longest-serving deputy prime minister in Japanese history. Taro Aso was born into a celebrity. His maternal ancestors had many high-ranking officials, his paternal side was a famous chaebol, and his sister Nobuko was married to the royal family. Before entering politics, Aso served as the president of Aso Co., Ltd., a family business, and successfully guided the transformation of the company. Entering politics in 1979, he was elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in his hometown of Fukuoka, and gradually grew into a powerful figure within the Liberal Democratic Party. He has successively served as director of the Economic Planning Agency, minister in charge of economic and fiscal policy, minister of general affairs, minister of foreign affairs, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party's political affairs investigation, and secretary-general of the Liberal Democratic Party. However, he failed to reverse the weak situation of the Liberal Democratic Party during his term. In the 45th general election of Japanese House of Representatives members held in 2009, he was defeated by the opposition Democratic Party. The Liberal Democratic Party lost its ruling position again since 1993-1994. In December 2012, the Liberal Democratic Party regained power in the 46th general election of Japanese House of Representatives members. As an important ally of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Taro Aso has served as the deputy prime minister, minister of finance, and minister of finance since the second Abe cabinet. He is another former prime minister who has returned to the cabinet after Miyazawa Kiichi and Hashimoto Ryutaro. He is also the other person who first served as prime minister and then deputy prime minister after Hatahara Kishiro.
