Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi (Burmese: အောင်ဆန်းစုကြည်, Romanized: aung hcan: cu. krany, pronunciation: [ʔàʊɰ sʰáɰ sṵ tɕì] ; June 19, 1945-), Burmese politician and writer, one of the founders of the National League for Democracy. Aung San Suu Kyi was born in Yangon, Myanmar. Her father is General Aung San, who is revered as the Father of the Nation by the Myanmar people. In 1990, she led the National League for Democracy to win the election, but the election results were annulled by the military government. Over the next 20 years, she was placed under house arrest in her apartment on and off by the military government for 15 years. She received continuous assistance from people from all walks of life and Amnesty International, and was only released after the Myanmar general election on November 13, 2010. Aung San Suu Kyi won the Sakharov Prize in 1990 and the Nobel Peace Prize the following year. In April 2012, she was successfully elected as a member of the People's House of Myanmar's Parliament and officially took office on May 2. In September 2012, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor awarded by the U.S. Congress. He was elected chairman at the first national conference of the National League for Democracy held in Yangon on March 10, 2013. In March 2016, she took over as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Presidential Office of Myanmar, and briefly served as Minister of Education and Ministry of Electricity and Energy. In April, he also took up the newly created position of State Counselor, which is regarded by the outside world as equivalent to the position of Prime Minister of Myanmar, becoming the de facto supreme leader of Myanmar (even though his official status is below the president). When she served in the Myanmar government since 2016, she was criticized by the international community for the persecution of the Rohingya people in Myanmar. In the early morning of February 1, 2021, she and other senior government officials were detained during the military coup. She was also accused by the military of "possessing prohibited equipment" (walkie-talkies). After Aung San, President Win Myint and other government cabinet members and 14 provincial and state leaders were detained, demonstrations against the military coup broke out across Myanmar, demanding the release of arrested leaders and recognition of the election results. The military and police used strong methods to suppress the demonstrators, including direct shooting. On December 6, she was found guilty of "incitement" and "violation of epidemic prevention regulations" by the Naypyidaw Zebudiri Court and sentenced to 4 years in prison, which was later reduced to 2 years by the Chairman of the National Management Council Min Aung Lai. On January 10, 2022, the military court convicted Aung San Suu Kyi on several charges and was sentenced to an additional four years in prison. On August 15, Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to an additional six years in prison. On December 30, she was additionally convicted by the military government, and her final sentence was increased to 33 years. August 1, 2023
