Bertolt Brecht
Eugen Bertholt Friedrich Brecht (German: Eugen Bertholt Friedrich Brecht, February 10, 1898 - August 14, 1956) was a German dramatist and poet. His plays have been performed around the world. Brecht created and replaced the concept of narrative drama, or "dialectical drama". Bertolt Brecht was born in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. He worked as a theater writer and director when he was young, and devoted himself to the left-wing labor movement. After 1933, the Nazi Party came to power and was forced to live in exile on the European continent. He went to the United States via the Soviet Union in 1941, but was persecuted against communism in the United States after the war. He had to return to Europe in 1947 and settled in East Berlin from the following year. In 1951, he received the National Prize for his contribution to drama, and in 1955, he received the Lenin Peace Prize. Brecht died in East Berlin on August 14, 1956.
