Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 - September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, essayist and poet. He was also a representative figure of the American Renaissance. He also served as a sailor and teacher. His most famous work is "Moby-Dick". His work "Typee" attracted considerable attention from the public and became a bestseller. He also quickly achieved literary success in the late 1840s. However, his popularity declined sharply in the mid-1850s and never rose again. When Herman Melville died in 1891, society had all but forgotten his existence. It was not until the "Melville Revival" in the early 20th century that his works gained widespread recognition, especially "Moby-Dick", which was hailed as one of the classics of American and even world literature.
