Amelia Earhart Amelia Earhart Writers · United States

Amelia Mary Earhart (English: Amelia Mary Earhart, July 24, 1897 – July 2, 1937 (missing)) was an American aviation pioneer, aviator, and women's rights activist. She was the first woman in history to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and set many other aviation records. Earhart was also a promoter of commercial aviation, wrote a best-selling book about his flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of the Ninety-Nine Organization, a group of female pilots. Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas, and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. She became interested in adventure at a young age and started to accumulate flying experience in her twenties. In 1928, Earhart achieved celebrity status when she became the first female passenger to fly across the Atlantic Ocean (alongside pilot Wilmer Stultz). In 1932, Earhart completed a non-stop solo transatlantic flight in a Lockheed Vega 5B aircraft, becoming the first woman to achieve this feat. She received the United States Distinguished Flying Cross for this achievement. In 1935, Earhart became a visiting professor at Purdue University, serving as an aeronautical engineering advisor and career counselor to female students. She was also a member of the National Woman's Party and an early supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment. Earhart is known as one of the most inspiring American figures in aviation in the late 1920s and 1930s, and is often compared to figures such as pioneer aviator Charles Lindbergh in his early aviation career and first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1937, Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan attempted to become the first woman to complete a circumnavigation of the world in a Purdue University-funded Lockheed 10-E Electra, but they eventually disappeared near Howland Island in the middle of the Pacific. The pair were last seen together on July 2, 1937, in Lae, New Guinea, the last land station before Howland Island and the final leg of their flight. It is generally believed that he and Noonan died somewhere in the Pacific during their circumnavigation, and nearly a year and six months after their disappearance, Earhart and Noonan were officially declared dead. In 2024, the wreckage of a Lockheed Star aircraft suspected to be piloted by Earhart was found on the seabed at a depth of approximately 4,900 meters approximately 160 kilometers away from Howland Island. But this discovery still needs to be further confirmed. Earhart inducted into National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1968
