In the 2016 Hong Kong Legislative Council election, Mao was successfully re-elected in the same constituency with the fourth highest number of votes (32,323 votes). In 2016, during the Legislative Council inquiry, Mao excitedly accused the primary school textbooks of "brainwashing education" and the content of "We are all Chinese" and the content was "scary to death." However, he also emphasizes the "pragmatic localism" line. Although he agrees that Hong Kong people should have the right to self-determination, he does not support Hong Kong independence and use force to deal with conflicts between China and Hong Kong. His political views are somewhat different from those of the localists. In early 2021, he was sentenced to 50 months in prison for violating Hong Kong's national security law for participating in the pro-democracy primaries for the 2020 Hong Kong Legislative Council election.
