During his term as president, he unabashedly implemented anti-communism, which contributed to the decline in the influence of communism and left-wing ideas on the American entertainment industry. In the 1950s, Reagan transitioned from acting to television, working as a publicist for the industrial company General Electric. In 1964, Reagan delivered the "Moment of Decision" speech for Republican presidential candidate Goldwater. This move won national attention for this political newcomer who had just entered the political arena, and he became the spokesperson of neoconservatism at that time. After winning a certain number of supporters, Reagan was elected governor of California in 1966. During his tenure as governor, Reagan chose to forcibly raise taxes to turn the budget deficit into a profit. However, his actions to raise taxes also aroused dissatisfaction and large-scale protests among people, including students at the University of California, Berkeley. During student demonstrations, Reagan took a tough stance and ordered the National Guard to be stationed on campus and suppress them with force. Reagan defeated then-Democratic President Jimmy Carter in the 1980 election, and the Republican Party also won a majority in the Senate for the first time in 26 years. Reagan was the oldest person to be elected president of the United States at the age of 69 years and 349 days when he first took office. This record remained until 2017, when Donald Trump, a member of the same party, broke it at the age of 70 years and 220 days. Reagan defeated former Vice President Walter Mondale during his 1984 re-election campaign and won the most 525 electoral votes in the history of the U.S. presidential election, accounting for 97.6% of the 538 Electoral College votes; this was also the second-largest vote share in the modern history of the U.S. presidential election, second only to Franklin Roosevelt against Alf Landon in 1936, when Roosevelt won 98.5% of the 531 electoral votes.
