Run Run Shaw
Sir Run Run Shaw, Grand Bauhinia Medal, CBE (English: Sir Run Run Shaw, November 19, 1907 - January 7, 2014), also known as Run Run Shaw, was a Hong Kong film and television producer, entertainment industry tycoon, and philanthropist during the mainland period of the Republic of China and after the war. Run Run Shaw was born in Zhejiang. In the 1920s, he went to Singapore to assist his third brother Yan Mei in the film distribution work there. After moving to Hong Kong in 1957, he established Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Co., Ltd. and filmed more than a thousand Shaw Brothers Chinese films. In addition, he was also one of the founders of Television Broadcasting Company Limited (TVB, commonly known as TVB, now TVB Group Limited). TVB dominated the television industry in Hong Kong and occupied the leading position in local ratings for many years. In 1977, Shao was conferred a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II. During his lifetime, he had been committed to charity and donated to social welfare, especially education and science and technology. The educational funds donated by Shaw are all over mainland China. Many colleges and universities and many primary and secondary schools in China have "Shaw Towers" named after Shaw. In his later years, Run Run Shaw allocated funds to establish the "Shaw Prize", known as the Nobel Prize of the East, to commend figures who have made outstanding contributions to education and scientific research. At 6:55 a.m. on January 7, 2014 (the seventh day of the twelfth lunar month in the Guisi year), Run Run Shaw passed away peacefully at his home in Clear Water Bay Building, where he once lived. It was said that he was 106 years old.
