Yohji Yamamoto (Japanese: Yamamoto Yōji / Yamamoto Toothpick, Romanized: Yamamoto Yōji, October 3, 1943 -) is an influential Japanese fashion designer active in Tokyo and Paris. He has been rated as a master tailor comparable to French fashion designer Madeleine Vionnet, and is known for his avant-garde tailoring methods that incorporate Japanese design aesthetics. His designs have always been based on black aesthetics, and he also prefers to pursue the sense of space between the body and the fabric. His awards include the French Order of Arts and Letters, the Order of the Purple Ribbon, the French National Order of Merit, the Royal Industrial Designer of the United Kingdom and the Master of Design from the International Fashion Group. In 2019, Yohji Yamamoto opened a flagship store at K11 MUSEA in Hong Kong. This is the first time in 20 years since the closure of the Hong Kong branch in the 1980s that he opened a mainline specialty store in Hong Kong.
