St. Charles
Saint Carlo Borromeo (Latin: Sanctus Carolus Borromeus; Italian: Santo Carlo Borromeo; 1538-1584) was a European theologian and cardinal of the Catholic Church during the Renaissance. He was canonized as a saint in 1610. He was the nephew of Pope Pius IV and served as Secretary of State from 1560 to 1565. He helped reform church music and presided over part of the Council of Trento. As Archbishop of Milan, he enforced the strict Edict of Trento and removed some of the decorations from the Milan Cathedral. He also reformed religious orders and persecuted witches and other heretics. The famous Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo was his nephew.
