Maria Gimbutas
Marija Gimbutienė (Lithuanian: Marija Gimbutienė, January 23, 1921 – February 2, 1994) was an American Lithuanian archaeologist who is famous for her academic achievements in the study of ancient European Neolithic and Bronze Age cultures, and her tomb hypothesis is also widely accepted. This hypothesis points to the origin of Proto-Indo-European languages in the steppes of Eastern Europe. Maria Gimbutas believed that Neolithic sites in Lithuania and across Eurasia provided archaeological evidence that ancient Indo-European societies were neither matrilineal nor patrilineal, but she later argued in some academic circles that these ancient societies were matrilineal.
