Marlon Brando, Jr. (English: Marlon Brando, Jr., April 3, 1924 - July 1, 2004), born in Nebraska, United States, is an American film actor and social activist. The 27th and 45th Oscar winner. He is acclaimed for bringing realism to cinematic performance and is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actors of all time. He helped popularize the Stanislavskian acting method and studied with Stella Adler in the 1940s. He is best known for his performances as Terry Malloy in "On the Waterfront" and Vito Corleone in "The Godfather", for which he won two Academy Awards for Best Actor. He has also performed well in many films such as "A Streetcar", "Viva Sabada", "Julius Caesar", "Bikes", "Image of the Golden Eye", "Last Tango in Paris", "Apocalypse Now" and many other films. Marlon Brando also participated as a social activist in the African American civil rights movement and many Native American movements. In 1999, he was selected by the American Film Institute as the fourth greatest actor of the century. He initially received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for his successful portrayal of the gangster Stanley in the 1951 film adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire, his first successful Broadway role. Later, he played Terry Malloy in "On the Waterfront", playing this character with flesh and blood, making him a representative of the lower-middle-class workers in the United States, which earned Brando more praise and an Academy Award. His role as rebel motorcycle gang leader Johnny Strabler in "Bikers" has become a timeless classic image in popular culture. Marlon Brando starred as Emiliano Zapata in "Viva Sabada" in 1952, as Mark Antony in Joseph Mankiewicz's 1953 film "Julius Caesar", and as Air Force Major Lloyd Gruver in the 1957 film "Cherry Blossoms" adapted from James Michener's novel. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor three times. In the 1950s, Brando was selected into the "Top Ten Money-Making Stars" list three times, ranking tenth in 1954, sixth in 1955, and fourth in 1958. The 1960s were a low point for Brando. He directed and starred in the cult Western film One Eyed, which suffered a major commercial failure.
