Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, née Byron, was a British mathematician and writer, best known for her work on Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, a mechanical general-purpose computer. She was the first person to argue that computers could be used for more than just arithmetic, and published the first algorithm for the Analytical Engine. As a result, Ada is often considered the first programmer in history.
