Joseph Maurice Ravel (French: Joseph Maurice Ravel, March 7, 1875 - December 28, 1937), French composer, pianist and conductor. Born in 1875 in Sibourg, a small mountain town in southern France near Spain, he is a Basque. When he died in Paris in 1937, he was already as famous as Claude Debussy in the French music scene as an Impressionist composer. His music is known for its delicacy, emotional richness and poignancy, and he is considered one of the major composers of the twentieth century. His piano music, chamber music and wind instruments cannot be ignored in the history of music. Piano pieces such as "Miroirs" and "Ghosts of the Night" are classic works; orchestral pieces such as "Daphny et Croy" and the orchestral arrangements for Mussorgsky's piano suite "Pictures at an Exhibition" brilliantly demonstrate his skill in expressing light and shadow through music. For the public, the most familiar one should be his "Polyloo".
