Mack Sennett (formerly known as Michael Sinnott, January 17, 1880 - November 5, 1960) was a Canadian actor, director, comedian and studio head, known as the "King of Comedy". Sennett was born in Danville, Quebec, in 1880. He began his film career at the Biograph Company in New York City before establishing Keystone Studios in Edendale, Los Angeles, in 1912. Keystone had the first fully enclosed movie stage, and Sennett also became famous in the film industry for pioneering hilarious plots such as pie-smashing and car chases in the Keystone Police Movie. He also made short films showcasing his swimsuit girls, many of whom went on to have successful acting careers. Sennett's work in talkies was less successful and he went bankrupt in 1933. In 1938, he was awarded an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement for his contribution to film comedy.
