Emil Jannings (German: Emil Jannings, July 23, 1884 - January 2, 1950) was a Swiss-born German/Austrian actor. Emile Jennings was the first Academy Award winner for Best Actor and the Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival in 1937. To this day he is still the only German actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. Emil Jennings is best known for his work with F.W. Murnau and Josef von Sternberg, including the 1930 film "The Blue Angel" with Marlena Dietrich. The Blue Angel was the film in which Emile Jennings carved a niche for himself in the new medium of talkies, but it was Marlena Dietrich who stole the show. He was unemployed after the war due to his participation in many Nazi propaganda films.
