Fan Penngling — biography

Fan Penngling (?—?), male, from Jianshui County, Yunnan Province, was an industrialist and constitutionalist politician in the late Qing Dynasty. Fan Penngling was a member of the Qing Dynasty. In the 29th year of Guangxu's reign (1903), brothers Fan Penngling and Fan Songling, as well as Zhu Xiaowen and others, believed that "our profit power was spilling over due to the sluggish industry in Yunnan" and planned to build a match factory in Jianshui County in order to "boycott foreign goods and gain a little profit power". After investigation, they believed that "the forests on the border of Lin'an are lush and can be used for making matches." In the winter of the same year, brothers Fan Penngling and Fan Songling went to Shanghai to investigate the situation and learned that most of the "matches sold in China" were made in Japan, and the manufacturing method was "quite convenient." They then decided that Fan Penngling would return to Yunnan to raise capital, and Fan Songling would go to Japan to learn technology. Three years later, Fan Songling returned to China after completing his studies and brought back the machines he purchased in Japan. Soon, brothers Fan Penngling and Fan Songling used "20,000 yuan" capital to establish Lin'an Xingye Company to trial manufacture matches. Due to insufficient capital, they have not built their own factory yet. Instead, they use the back hall of Tianjun Temple as the factory. Through continuous experiments, by 1910, the quality of the matches manufactured by the company had reached a level "comparable to Japanese products", and the price was low, which was "quite popular among the business community." However, "Unexpectedly, on March 20th, a man named Hu was entertaining guests in the temple. He was sneaked into the female factory by a female guest. He took firewood to test the firewood and set fire to the firewood on the ground. It burned the whole house for a while. In addition, strong winds helped the fire, so the temple was burned down to two floors. All the goods and machinery were also burned, with an estimated value of more than 30,000 yuan." The Fan brothers then asked Yunnan Quanye Road for help. On the third day of May in the second year of Xuantong (1910), Yunnan Quanye Taoist Taoist Liu Xiaozuo received a letter from Xingye Company requesting public funds for subsidies.
