Dario Fo (Italian: Dario Fo, Italian pronunciation: [ˈdaːrjo ˈfɔ], March 24, 1926 - October 13, 2016), Italian playwright and theater director, was born in San Giano, Italy. His father was a railway technician. Together with his wife Franca Rame, he devoted himself to using drama, especially the comedy style of professional artists, to cry out for the interests of the lower class people. He was affectionately called the "people's bard" by the general public. He has more than 70 comedy works that are widely circulated, and he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1997. "Because he inherited the spirit of medieval comedians, denouncing authority and upholding the dignity of the oppressed." Dario Fo is a very controversial playwright. Many playwrights, literary critics, neo-Nazis, and Vatican authorities have lambasted him on purely literary grounds.
