Mother Teresa Of Calcutta
Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu (Albanian: Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu), whose real name is Anjezë Gonxhe (Albanian: Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, also translated as Yikes Gonza Bojashu; August 26, 1910 - September 5, 1997), the Catholic name of Mother Teresa of Calcutta (Latin: Sancta Teresia de Calcutta) (or Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Saint Teresa of Calcutta), known to the world as Mother Teresa (Latin: Mater Teresa), Saint Mother Teresa, is an Albanian-Indian Catholic nun, missionary and saint. Mother Teresa was born in Skopje (now the capital of the Republic of North Macedonia) in the Kosovo Province of the Ottoman Empire. After living in Macedonia for nearly eighteen years, Theresa moved to Ireland and then to India, where she spent the rest of her life. Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 to provide homes for those suffering from AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, and operate porridge factories, pharmacies, clinics, child and family counseling agencies, orphanages and schools. One of the vows taken by members of the Missionary Society is to "serve the poorest of the poor wholeheartedly." Mother Teresa has received many honors or awards, including the Magsaysay Award, among which the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 is the most famous. However, although Mother Teresa received much praise from all walks of life, there were many criticisms and controversies both during her lifetime and after her death; critics mostly targeted the poor medical and living conditions in the relief institutions she opened, and her anti-abortion stance. Mother Teresa passed away in 1997 and was canonized by the Catholic Church in 2016. September 5 (the day of her death) is her holy day.
