Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (Norwegian: Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen, July 16, 1872 - June 18, 1928) was a Norwegian polar explorer. He was born in Brony, Norway, on December 16, 1872. He disappeared in the Arctic Ocean on June 18, 1928. From 1911 to 1912, the expedition he led was the first to reach the South Pole. They arrived at the South Pole on December 14, 1911, and the news spread on March 7, 1912. Their expedition arrived a month earlier than that led by Englishman Robert Scott. His expedition was undoubtedly the first to reach Antarctica. He was also the first explorer to cross the Northwest Waterways. In 1928, the "Italia" airship was wrecked in the Arctic. Amundsen disappeared while flying to rescue him. His plane has not been found yet. The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station on the South Pole was named after him and his competitor Scott. A relatively large impact crater at the south pole of the moon was also named Amundsen Crater after him.
