Rabindranath Tagore (Bengali: রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর; May 7, 1861 - August 7, 1941), a Bengali writer, musician, philosopher and anti-modern nationalist. In 1913, he became the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature with "Gitanjali". In Western countries, Tagore is generally regarded as a poet and rarely as a philosopher, but in India he is both because his poems contain profound religious and philosophical insights. For Tagore, his poetry was his gift to God, and he himself was God's suitor. His poems enjoy epic status in India. He himself is considered a saint by many Hindus.
