Gu Cheng (September 24, 1956 - October 8, 1993), born in Beijing and native of Shanghai, is a contemporary Chinese poet and the son of writer Gu Gong. He is one of the main representatives of misty poetry and is known as the "fairy tale poet". Gu Cheng dropped out of school when he was in the third grade of elementary school. He began writing poetry before the Cultural Revolution. His early poems had a child-like innocent style and dreamy mood, using intuitive and impressionistic sentences to sing about the fairy-tale life of a teenager. His poem "A Generation" "The night gave me black eyes/but I use them to find light" has become a classic line in new Chinese poetry.
