Cicero
Political figures · ancient rome
Marcus Tullius Cicero (Latin: Marcus Tullius Cicero; January 3, 106 BC - December 7, 43 BC) was a philosopher, politician, lawyer, writer, and orator in the late Roman Republic. Born into a wealthy family of the knightly class, he devoted himself to law and politics at a young age, and later served as consul of the Roman Republic in 63 BC. At the same time, because of his speeches and literary works, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest orators and most influential prose writers in ancient Rome. In the political crisis of the late Roman Republic, he was a loyal defender of the liberalism represented by the Republic and a political enemy of Mark Antony. He supported the constitution of ancient Rome and was therefore considered the ancient pioneer of the doctrine of separation of powers. He was elected consul in 63 BC and was later assassinated by Antony in Formia. Cicero made considerable contributions to the development of Latin due to the literary achievements of his works. He was a famous literary figure in Rome at the time. His majestic oratory style, witty essays, fluent prose, and mastery of eloquence set the literary style of classical Latin. Cicero was also a researcher of ancient Greek philosophy. Through translation, he introduced many works of Greek philosophy to the Romans, allowing the study of Greek philosophy to continue after Greece was conquered by Rome. Cicero's influence in ancient Rome waned during the Medieval Era, but was revived during the Renaissance. Petrarch rediscovered Cicero's letters in the 14th century, which began a re-study of Cicero by Renaissance scholars. Therefore, some scholars believe that the Renaissance was essentially a revival of Cicero, and through him the rest of classical ancient culture was revived. Cicero's influence reached its peak in the Age of Enlightenment, and those influenced by his political philosophy included Locke, Hume, Montesquieu and other philosophers. Adams, Hamilton and others often quoted Cicero's works in their works. It can be said that Cicero's republican ideas have profoundly influenced European philosophy and political theory, and are still the subject of research in Roman history.

Theodore Roosevelt
Political figures · United States
Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (English: Theodore Roosevelt Jr., October 27, 1858 - January 6, 1919), a Dutch-American, American politician, was the 26th President of the United States and a retired colonel of the United States Army. He was born in the Roosevelt family of New York City. Theodore Roosevelt served as Deputy Secretary of the Navy, participated in the Spanish-American War, and was elected Vice President in 1900. In 1901, President William McKinley was assassinated by an anarchist. He succeeded him as president at the age of 42, making him the youngest president in American history. His unique personality and reform policies made him one of the greatest presidents in American history and one of the leaders of the American Progressive Era. During his presidential term, Theodore Roosevelt became a pioneer in environmental protection in the United States, protecting forests, minerals, oil and other resources, and establishing national parks; he opposed the excessive behavior of large enterprises, broke up large trusts, and maintained fair competition; he established the Fair Trade Act and promoted reconciliation between labor and capitalists; he strengthened the executive power of the president and was considered the first modern president in American history; he pursued the Monroe Doctrine externally, implemented expansionary policies, built a strong military, and intervened in American affairs. Theodore Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for his successful mediation of the Russo-Japanese War, becoming the first American to win this award. During the mediation process, he was keenly aware of the potential threat posed by the newly rising Japan to the United States. At the same time, he also realized that the Panama Canal not only had economic value to the United States, but also enabled the U.S. naval fleet to move more quickly between the Pacific and the Atlantic, which was of great military strategic significance. Therefore, he pushed hard to promote the Panama Canal project during his tenure and regarded it as his greatest achievement. In 1908 he gave up his bid for re-election. After leaving office, Theodore Roosevelt intended to run for president again in 1912, but he had differences with the Republican Party, so he left the party and ran for president on behalf of the Progressive Party in an attempt to make a comeback. In the presidential election of the same year, due to the split of the Republican Party, Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson won. Theodore Roosevelt won 88 electoral votes, becoming the third party candidate with the most electoral votes in the U.S. presidential election. However, he has since retired from politics. Theodore Roosevelt's distant cousin, Franklin Delano Roosevelt of the Democratic Party, was later elected President of the United States, so Theodore Roosevelt is often called "Old Roosevelt" in the Chinese environment. Her most famous work is a trilogy of modernist novels describing life in medieval Scandinavia - "Kristin Lavransdatter" (Kristin Lavransdatter), which is set in fourteenth-century Norwegian society and describes the life of a woman. Undset's novel "reproduces the social life of Norway in the first half of the fourteenth century and criticizes the ills of society at that time - violence and injustice. When Undset was writing this work, her writing skills were already very proficient. In addition to her family background, she had a deeper understanding of ancient social life. She wrote It feels natural and easy to read. She injects modern life into the characters dressed in fourteenth-century clothes, so there is no sense of being outside the world when reading this historical novel. You will feel that it reflects living reality, and the characters in it are as lifelike as those in modern novels." (Meng Xianzhong)
Sigmund Freud
Scholars · austrian empire
Sigmund Freud (German: Sigmund Freud, birth name: Sigismund Schlomo Freud; May 6, 1856 - September 23, 1939) was an Austrian psychologist, founder of psychoanalysis, philosopher, sexologist, and one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. Psychoanalysis is a clinical approach to the assessment and treatment of pathologies arising from psychological conflicts, conducted through a dialogue between patient and psychoanalyst, a discipline that encompasses the unique theory of mind and human agency derived from it. He was born into a Jewish family in the Austrian Empire (now the Czech Republic). In 1881, he received a doctorate in medicine from the University of Vienna. After completing his charter in 1885, he was appointed Chair Professor of Neuropathology and became Associate Professor in 1902. That is to say, ever since graduation he worked in Vienna, where he began his clinical practice in 1886. After Germany annexed Austria in 1938, Freud moved to London, England to escape the Nazis. Died in England in 1939. When Freud founded psychoanalysis, he developed therapeutic techniques such as "free association" and discovered the concept of transference and established its central role in the analytic process. Freud's inclusion of infantile forms of sexual desire led him to formulate the Oedipus complex as a central tenet of psychoanalytic theory. His interpretation of dreams as wish fulfillment provided him with a clinical model of the underlying mechanisms of symptom formation and repression. On this basis, Freud elaborated on his theory of the subconscious and continued to develop a model of the psychological structure consisting of the id, ego and superego. Freud postulated the existence of "libido" (sexual drive), which is sexual energy invested in psychological processes and structures and creates erotic attachments; and the death drive, which is the source of repetition compulsions, hatred, aggression, and neurotic guilt. In later works, Freud carried out extensive interpretations and criticisms of religion and culture. His works such as "The Interpretation of Dreams", "Three Essays on Sexuality", "Totems and Taboos", etc., proposed concepts such as the subconscious, id, ego and superego, Oedipus complex, sexual impulses, psychological defense mechanisms, etc., and is known as the "Father of Psychoanalysis". Psychoanalysis is currently in decline as a diagnostic and clinical practice overall, but it remains influential in psychology, psychiatry, psychotherapy, and the humanities as a whole.
